India: Five people were arrested and three others including a cop and a deputy block development officer booked by Pudukottai town police on Friday in connection with the poaching of a spotted deer in Thuvarankurichi forest range in Trichy district. Three licensed weapons used for poaching the wild animal have also been recovered.
Apart from the main accused F Robinson, 47, the arrested have been identified as Rajesh, 28, Raman, 19, Suresh, 20, and Venkatachalapathy, 27. The poaching came to light during interrogation of the main accused when his jeep hit a motorcycle while returning after the hunting on Thursday evening. Robinson who is into leather business was driving his jeep near Pudukottai collector office when it hit the motorcycle. Police arrived at the spot and started questioning him after he picked up an altercation with the motorcycle rider. Following a random search in his vehicle, police recovered three licensed weapons including a 0.22 rifle and a double barrel breech-loading (DBBL) gun.
Spotting blood stains in his car, the police took him to the police station and carried out an inquiry when he confessed to have poached a spotted deer and distributed the meat among his friends. His friends included Ramachandran, 29, a police constable of Pudukottai superintendent of police office, and Subramanian, 45, a deputy block development officer.
