Hunters nabbed for killing 14 protected barking deer

Two Taitung men were nabbed by authorities Wednesday in Hualien for hunting and killing over a dozen Reeves's muntjac, also known as Formosan barking deer, a protected animal. The two men, members of Taiwan's indigenous population and residents of Yanping Township in neighboring Taitung County, were stopped by police in the mountainous region of Yongfeng on the border between the two counties. Authorities searched their vehicle and found the carcasses of 14 barking deer -- the largest single haul of illegal poaching ever caught in Taiwan, according to police. Two of the dead deer were pregnant. The two men, surnamed Yu and Wang, said they were hunting the animals for food. They were referred to prosecutors for further probing. Taiwan's indigenous people, who traditionally live in rural and mountainous areas, are allowed to hunt for food though certain restrictions apply. The barking deer is a solitary, small deer known for its distinctive cry. It is a protected species in Taiwan. (Source : http://focustaiwan.tw/news/asoc/201411050036.aspx)
