Officials with the tiger protection and conservation unit of the Kerinci Seblat National Park’s (TNKS), the largest national park in Sumatra Indonesia, removed 69 tiger traps in one month. The operation, called Sapu Jerat, took place from June to July where officials removed 40 traps still alive and also steel wire traps outside the park area. Dian Risdianto, head of the unit, said the total amount of traps found was more than those found in previous operations in the last 2 years. “The percentage has increased by almost 600 percent. This means Sumatran tigers’ existence is being really threatened,” said Dian. Today's wild Sumatran tiger population is estimated at fewer than 400 individuals.
