One of three leopard cubs found in Rautahat dies

RAUTAHAT-Nepal, May 11: One of the three leopard cubs found Wednesday near the forest in Chandranigahapur has died on Saturday evening. The three cubs, which were only a few days old, were found by the forest guards of the District Forest Office, Rautahat, during patrol and were in the care of the guards themselves after the park authorities refused to taken them in. Chief Forest Officer Baburam Bhandari of District Forest Office Chandranigahpur said that one of the cubs died due to lack of proper care and nutrition. "The forest guards had kept the three cubs safely at their residential quarters and were feeding them buffalo milk, Bhandari said. "Maybe the bufalo milk does not contain the nutrients found in leopard milk. Also the gaurds did not know when and how to feed the cubs," Bhandari said. The forest guards had found the three cubs five days ago in Chocha forest area under Chandranigahapur forest division. The guards had recovered those cubs when locals, who had gone to the forest to collect fodder, were taking home the strange-looking animals thinking that they were kittens. With the outbreak of fires in Rautahat forests in recent days, poaching of wild animals has also increased. Locals have also been taking in young wildlife fleeing the forest fires.
