South Asia Wildlife Enforcement Network (SAWEN) organized a virtual orientation programme in collaboration with wildlife crime control bureau (WCCB) centre level under ZSL/SAWEN/HN programme. The program aimed to make acquaint and update on wildlife crime database-management information system (WCD-MIS) among the officials of Protected Area (PA) Offices and Division Forest Offices (DFOs). The week long program was held from 26 March to 02 April 2023.
Inaugurating the program, Mr. Ajay Karki, SAWEN Focal Person of Nepal and Deputy Director General, Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC) emphasized the importance and various applications of the System. Ms. Sabnam Pathak, officer at Department of Forests and Soil Conservation (DoFSC) encouraged the participants to learn about the System. Mr. Pradeep Bhattarai, Senior Environment Officer at the SAWEN Secretariat, shared the system's development process, initial stage implementation, resource utilization, and capacity development activities carried out so far. Mr. Bhattarai highlighted the features, data entry mechanisms and held a practical session about the system. Mr. Chayan Shrestha from Pathway Technology, the system developer, explained the technical aspects and features of the system. The System mainly covers wildlife crime, human wildlife conflict and wildlife rescue.
A total of 85 individuals were participated in the programme, representing different PAs including national parks, conservation areas, hunting reserves and zoological gardens; and DFOs of Nepal. The programme was completed in active participation of attended officials and also shared their viewpoints and feedback aiming to enhance the System. To fetch the relevant data in the system, usernames and passwords will be provided to all the participated offices through formal communication. Similar programmes will be planned and carry out in coming days.
