Poacher shot dead in Kaziranga
GUWAHATI: A poacher was gunned down in Kaziranga National Park during an encounter early on Wednesday morning. The park's divisional forest officer S K Seal Sarma said at least three poachers sneaked into the park on Tuesday night. "The poachers might have entered the park after crossing the Brahmaputra. They tried to take advantage of the floodwaters that have covered some parts of the park. But our staff spotted the gang," Sarma said.
"We recovered a modified 0.303 rifle and food items from the slain poacher. We had information about the possibility of this gang trying to sneak in," Sarma added. The poacher was killed in a gun-battle near Dotonga anti-poaching camp under Bagori forest range in the western part of the park, taking the poachers' toll to nine this year. Last month, a poacher was killed in the Kohora range of the park.
