Poaching on the rise in KA

India: Poaching of wild animals for food and trading have sharply increased in Karbi Anglong district and the most disturbing fact is that from professional hunters even common farmers have taken up the illegal act as source of income. According to information from various source incidents of poaching have amplified because of rapid decrease of forest due to extensive rubber cultivation; wild animals have become easy prey to the bullets and traps of the huntsman. Due to shatter conditions of the wildlife in neighbouring state, where a section of people love to consume wild animals are encouraging poachers and villagers to hunt in the wilderness of Karbi Anglong. Meats of deer, wild boar, civet, bear cab, monitor lizard, mongoose, snakes etc. are put up for sale in super market and new market locality almost every day. According to information, local poachers of Karbi Anglong hunted animal from Dhansiri, Disama, Marat Longri and other adjoining reserve forest and smuggle it to Dimapur. If ruthless killing of wild animals goes on unchecked soon the wildlife sanctuaries may be oblige to brand the so called safe haven of animals as place of safety for the poachers and hunters. For odd reason Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council which is practically responsible for protecting nearly seven thousand square kilometres of protected forest and declared wildlife sanctuaries has not taken enough step to stop hunting and trading of wildlife, every year thousands of migratory bird Amur Falcon is either killed by sling shots or are trapped in high altitude areas in Hamren subdivision of this district.
