Red sanders logs worth Rs.10 crore seized

India: Forest officials of the Tirupati Wildlife Circle on Thursday seized a huge container with over six tonnes of red sanders logs worth over Rs.10 crore at Balapalle check-post on the Chittoor-Kadapa border, about 30 km from Tirupati.

Speaking to The Hindu , Divisional Forest Officer (Wildlife) P. Venkata Subba Reddy said that the forest staff at the check-post stopped the container that was on its way to Renigunta at about 6 a.m. Surprisingly, there was no resistance from its driver Ramu (25) of Vellore, he said. “Going by the terrain, the driver could have easily escaped, but he did not. He said that the vehicle was empty. But on inspection, we have found more than 200 logs weighing about 6 tonnes,” Mr. Reddy said.
