India: The Baikunthapur forest officials on Sunday seized dried sea horses and arrested a smuggler from New Jalpaiguri area. The consignment packed in six plastic bags was around 55 kilograms that were brought from Chennai and plan to smuggle at Jaigaon along Indo- Bhutan border.
On tip-off forest staffs and officials from Baikunthapur forest division raided a house of Gautam Roy at Madhusudhan Colony near Siliguri and seized the sea horses. Later Roy was arrested.
Dharam Dutta, DFO of Baikunthapur forest division said that Roy is involved in smuggling cases. Sea horses, an endangered species protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
