Seven held in Raigad for smuggling Indian Pangolin

India: Seven men were nabbed for smuggling an Indian Pangolin, an endangered species.The Panvel range forest mobile squad laid a trap on the old Pune highway near Khalapur on Tuesday and nabbed the men. However the mammal was found dead inside the gunny bag.


Officer PV Marle said, “After receiving a tip-off about a Indian Pangolin being smuggled and brought for sale in Khalapur, we set up a trap and waylaid two private vehicles- at Pali phata along the old Mumbai-Pune highway. There were seven men in the two vehicles who were detained as in the Bolero jeep we found an Indian Pangolin inside a jute gunny bag. However, the Pangolin was dead probably due to summer heat and suffocation inside the gunny bag.”
