Tortoises seized from Azmer-Sealdah Express, three held

India: Police today seized more than 200 tortoises from a bogey of Azmer-Sealdah Express and arrested three women smugglers in this connection at Sasaram railway station in Rohtas district.

Rail police said here that acting on a tip-off a raid was conducted in a bogey of Azmer-Sealdah Express at Sasaram station, leading to seizure of more than 200 tortoise, weighing about 175 Kg.

"Three women smugglers were arrested in connection with smuggling of tortoise during the operation," police said, adding that they were identified as Sangita Devi, Sushma Devi and Pancho Devi, all natives of Unnao district in Uttar Pradesh.

During the interrogation, arrested women had given vital clues about network operating behind smuggling of tortoise across the country, police said, adding more arrest could be made in other parts of the country in this connection.

A large number of tortoises were also recovered from Dehradun Express at Gaya railway station in Bihar on Saturday last.
