Wildlife smuggler hurt in police action

BAITADI,  NEPAL, JUN 02 - A wildlife smuggler was injured when police opened fire at him in retaliation at Tusarpani in Sunsera, Darchula, on Friday night. Deputy Superintendent of Police Daman Chand said a gang of around 15 smugglers opened fire at the police patrol team at around 11 pm. The gang was smuggling organs of wild animals worth more than Rs 50 million. The injured smuggler—Chhawang Tanduk Tamang of Humla—was rushed to Dhangadi for treatment. Chand said police also arrested three porters—Kusal Singh Dhami, Gagan Singh Dhami and Thole Dhami—from Sunsera VDC-2. The other smugglers and porters, however, fled throwing away animal organs. Police said they stepped up security in the area after they were tipped off about wildlife smuggling to Tibet from India through Nepali route. The organs seized include six pieces tiger skin, 45 kilograms of tiger bones, nine teeth of tiger, five pieces of musk of musk deer and 35 kilograms of pangolin scales.
